Stair nosings are many and varied. So choosing the best one for your particular needs is critical.
Assuming you have an idea on what stair nosings are, it’s often a difficult task to get your head around the countless options available. If working in the mining sector, for example, your typical 5 year warranty stair nosing will do the job. It pays to watch out for warranties as some nosings come with only a 12 month warranty.
Staying away from these lower grade nosings will ultimately save you money – unless the job in question is only temporary and the infrastructure is going to be decommissioned in the next 12 months. The cheaper ones will get you through for minimal cost – in which case, anti-slip tape could be used to ensure further savings. General Industrial Applications
Nosings used in general industrial applications such as mining or construction are widely available, and relatively cheap to manufacture. Essentially a crushed aggregate bonded to a galvanised steel or other type of backing, and baked or dried to ensure optimum wear resistance. Multiple aggregate types and sizes are available, depending on the environment. For wet areas, you should choose a larger aggregate for drainage, for environments where light footwear is to be used, opting for a smaller aggregate could be a better option.
Crushed quartz is a common aggregate that wears out quickly – aluminium oxide and silicon carbide are more premium aggregates that will not wear out quickly.
Typical aggregate grades are commercial, industrial and offshore, ranging from very fine to very coarse. Typical backings are galvanised steel and 308 stainless steel.
Ports, Terminals and Marine Environments
Industry Tip 101: When installing steel stair nosing’s at a port or in a marine environment, it’s worth going the extra mile in quality. Some companies offer to coat their nosings with an additional layer of resin. This eliminates any hydrocarbon contamination, i.e. RUST, ensuring you a long service life. This is a durable solution.
This nullifies corrosion, delamination and flaking, giving you extended product life, and increasing the time required between nosing change outs.
Consider the following when your nosings are for such an environment:
- Stainless steel/aluminium backing
- Offshore grade aggregate to ensure spray is easily drained
- Extra coating of resin
Food Processing Facilities
Inside food processing facilities, picking the correct type of nosings is a must. 316 Stainless Steel, powder coated Zincalume and fibreglass are the classic foundations used. Extra coatings of resin should be used to ‘lock’ all aggregate onto the backing and ensure no loose particles work their way into food product.
When using fibreglass type nosings, ensure that all holes drilled are sealed with a 2-pack catalyst mix, to ensure the nosings don’t begin to splinter, causing potential product contamination. Some metal nosings come with a woven medium between the foundation and the aggregate – these are ideal for hot wash-down zones, as when the metal expands and contracts under thermal expansion, the aggregate will not crack off.
