Stand Up Desk Mats – Choosing the best

Amco Standing Desk Mat

Stand up desk mats often used in the office working from home for the next few months? Here’s what you need to consider with your Temporary Stand Up Desk mat…

If you’ve been affected at your workplace by this recent outbreak, and have made the bold move to stay at home all day and deal with your pet while attempting to churn through reports, sales meetings and so on, then read on for great tips on how to pick the perfect anti-fatigue mat for your needs!

Stop right here if you consider yourself lazy – and proud of it – and jump over to Kogan for great prices on comfortable computer chairs. But for those more active and keener to keep the old blood pumping around the body then here’s what you need to think about…

How Liquid Proof is Your Standup Desk Mat?

When do you mostly stand, and when do you find yourself sitting?

For most people, a 2-3 hour stint in the morning is the norm – followed by a sit-down between morning tea and lunch. These early hours of standing, can be a peril if your cat decides that it too would like to share the desk space and sends your morning coffee onto the floor.

A good fatigue mat needs to be waterproof, milk proof and liquid proof in general. Nothing worse than trying to get the smell of wet rubber out of a sodden mat. Go for a mat made from Nitrile or Silicon as these tend to have better waterproof properties than standard rubber ones.

How Durable is your Standing Desk Mat?

While $200 mats from Bunnings will definitely last the distance, and a $20 ebay one may not, it’s important to look at what you are using it for. A hard tough rubber industrial mat will support a bulldozer and a family of Clydesdales but if it’s only supporting you, then definitely look at softer rubbers. After all, its only going into your office – not a ship building factory.

Holes or no Holes?

It’s sad the amount of people that ask us why our stand-up desk mats don’t have holes, when mats that you see in workshops/factories/warehouses do… Long story short, holes look ugly and are a catch point for cake crumbs, cat fur and popcorn. Think your keyboard collects muck? Try a mat with holes and see what collects more… really guys, get a solid mat.

What colour should I get?

You can get bright coloured silicone mats online for a decent price, but no matter how clean your shoes are, they end up filthy within a few weeks’ time. Stay away from fluro colours and stick with black or grey. Yes it isn’t as exciting, but hey, at least they look clean.

This one does come down to preference… Rubber softness is measured on a Shore Hardness Scale which no-one really uses, but some good trivia for you. Mats are like shoes and what suits one person wont suit another. Try picking something that isn’t too soft that you bog in it, but is cushioning enough to support your whole foot – not just your arch and heel. Rule of thumb, if you can feel the mat under the whole of your foot with no shoes on then you are on a winner.
