This blog post is based on recent observations of steel anti slip stair nosings at different workplaces that we at Australian Matting Company (AMCO) have recently visited ourselves. Rather than splitting these into different posts, we’ve decided to present them as another Q&A, with some handy hints thrown in between our characters Slip and Mat. So, the dialogue goes this way:
Slip, who works at a food manufacturing plant, starts. “We did a rush job on this floor in our production area. We applied a non slip brushable coating onto a metal sheet thinking it was a cheaper alternative to buying locally manufactured steel anti slip stair nosings. And, as you can see, the non slip component (coloured yellow) has delaminated badly. Almost gone. After a few months it is no longer any use, as this is just bare metal showing and dangerously slippery.”
What can we do?
Definitely a job for our Gripmaster steel anti slip stair nosing. The sheet is then oven-baked for improved drying and allowed to cure further for several days before released for the store.

Gripmaster steel anti-slip stair nosings are designed to cover any worn or slippery steps. They improve stair safety and also help prevents any slips, trips & falls in the workspace. Gripmaster exterior anti slip stair nosings come in an unlimited range of sizes. If special lengths are required, we are limited to the standard lengths and widths of steel sheets. 1800 mm being the longest one piece length. Bear in mind your steps maybe not as straight as you think so its best not to order to long a piece in one length
So, how do we fix the anti slip stair nosing to the stair?
You can install Gripmaster steel anti slip stair nosings in several ways. You can screw these down or lay down with a sealant.
What about pop rivetting?
We don’t suggest this as you must realise that drilling holes into steel stairs, especially chequer plate can be a real mongrel of a job. You most likely will break a few drill bits which add to the cost in the process.
Ok, so we bolt this down, anything we need to consider?
If you are doing this, we ask you tell us before hand. This allows us to pre-drill the steel anti slip stair nosing before laying down the epoxy and aggregate when being manufactured. This gets the drill holes edges fully coated with resins, etc. If you drill through this while doing installation, you destroy the integrity of the epoxy coating, exposing bare metal where you drill the holes. This is now a point of weakness wherein corrosion will begin.
We also suggest that you cover uneven steps in two or three separate pieces. This prevents undue stress on the steel anti slip nosing in areas that are bent or bulging.
The work area we speak of is mostly wet and has to be cleaned with aggresive chemicals daily.
For those areas and where you are installing on chequer plate, we strongly suggest using a high grade marine grade sealant like Sikaflex 291. And, we also suggest the following procedure:
Pay close attention to surface preparation—clean both substrates, wire brush stairs– wipe clean and remove any friable material or dirt, fillings and so on.
Run a 9 mm bead of a quality sealant underneath the steel anti slip stair nosing about 12 mm in from the edge all round. Then run a bead of sealant longways through the middle to help keep nosing supported correctly. Take note to push down until a little excess comes out from all edges – leave this to set over night.
Start from the top stair and work down to the bottom.
Next day, trim off all excess glue/sealant from around the outside of the nosing with a sharp Stanley knife.
The external anti slip stair nosings need to be sealed all the way around so moisture cannot get underneath.
The sealant also forms a layer to keep dissimilar metals apart to avoid oxidisation, or galvanic corrosion, which can easily happen.
